WATER FOB TAKAPUNA.

REPORT BY engineer. APPROXIMATE COST, £14,000. A retort on the question of securing an adequate water supply for the Borough of Takapuna was submitted to the Takapuna Borough Council last night by the borough engineer, Mr. Lockie Gannon. Mr. Gannon suggested a scheme, the approximate cost of -which would be £14.000.

! In reply to the council's inquiry as to the method necessary to test the proposed water supply at Lake View Estate, discovered by water diviners, the engineer said he had considered the matter carefully, and had found that for, say, a population of 3000 it would be necessary Ito provide 120,000 gallons per day. In the event of this source of supply beinjj satisfactory as regards quantity and quality, it would be necessary to instal a complete pumping plant in duplicate. J which would ensure a constant supply in I case of a breakdown. The power of" the ; engine and the capacity of the pumps rej quired would be determined in accordance j with the supply available. It would be J necessary to construct a service reservoir J of not lees than 500,000 gallons capacity jon the hill near the trig station at the I northern end of the borough. In design- | ing this reservoir provision should be i made for acquiring sufficient land for j future additions. Testing the Supply. In order to thoroughly test the present j suggested source of supply it would be j necessary to sink a shaft 30ft deep, proj vided water was not obtainable at a j higher level, and then put down a 6in I bore. When the water was tapped, a temporary pumping plant should be hired and a test made by pumping night and day for at least 14 days. lit the event of an assured water supply being obtained from other sources in "the future, the proposed reservoir would still suit the purpose for storage of water for Takapuna. Further, if this assured supply was Dy gravitation, the water could be piped to the pumping station and dealt -with from this centre to the reservoir, and then distributed to the water mains throughout the borough. The engineer supplied the following approximate cost of a pumping plant, reservoir, rising and distributing' mains, testing, and acquiring land: — „ £ e. d. Reservoir „ „ 4.500 0 0 Pumping plant „. 2,500 0 O Rising and distributing mains 6.000 O 0 Acauiring land 500 0 0 Testing, say 500 0 0 Total _. £14,000 0 0 Committee's Recommendations.

The Water Supply Committee brought down the following recommendations on the matter: —(1) That sections 167, 168, 169, 170, of the Lake View Estate, be I acquired under the Public Works Act, I and the borough solicitor be instructed to immediately take the necessary legal proceedings; (2) that the council authorise. I the expenditure of a sum not exceeding £520 to test the indications of water supplied by Messrs. Sutcliffe and Mounce; (3) that Messrs. Sutcliffe and Mounce be asked to submit a price for sinking a shaft Bft by sft, stating price per running foot in rock, clay, or any other material met with, and also a price for sinking a 6in bore, including all iron casing; (4) that the scheme set forth by the engineer be adopted by the council, and put before the ratepayers with other loan proI posals, so that the money could be raised j in the event of sufficient water being ; found on the site indicated.. Report Referred Back. i Mr. E. E. Grimwade, moved that the I report of the Water Supply Committee Ibe referred back for consideration. Since j the report had been prepared, he said, the Devonport Borough Council had had a report presented to it regarding water supply. The speaker had been supplied with a copy of the latter report and in view of that fact he suggested that the Water Supply Committee's report be referred back for further consideration. The motion was carried. I It was reported to the council that the consumption of water in the borough for June was 581.000 gallons. The height of the water in Pupuke Lake at Julv 1 was 2ft 8 !in above high-water mark— 3gin higher than on June 1.
