NOTE? ON THE RACING.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' COnnKSrOXDEN'T.]

Hastings, Saturday. The Wellington trainer. J. H. _ Prosser, produced Scrutineer, a four-year-old gelding hv Mahaki, from Dorccn, for tho Kidnappers Hack Hurdles, who gives some promise of turning out a payable proposition over fences later on. but he really had little chance with to-day's winner, Hurttkia who was only defeated by a small margin by Doon yesterday. , The race for the Havelock .Hack Steeples resolved .itself into a duel between Golden Water and Merry Lad, victory going to the latter. He was more fit to see the journey out. This was the only pair to finish,'even Master Webb, the favourite, jailing to complete the course. Cornelian, who was always ft good favourite ' for the Turamore Hurdles, ran an honest race, but could not foot it with the more lightly-weighted Aratiatia, a son of Achilles, who showed marked improvement on his essay in the Hawkc s Bay Hurdles. Sam Pan. who finished fourth, should bo benefited by the.race, for it was his first effort for some time. , Hereford, who/was made a Rood second favourite to Shaki m the Ladies Bracelet, had every show to win if 'ho-were good enough, but the fact is the big son Qof Fontenoy must bp over-rated. It is certain lie would be benefited by a spell. Shaki just played with the Test of the field, out in front all the way, and won easi y. A competitor, who may do bettor shortly, was Branßfiold, who was going on strong in fourth place. . ■_ _ , Of the fivo runners 111 the June Steeples Morning was tho least supported, probably because he was without a raco to reconi-. mend him, and also that his horseman was not regarded as a top-notcher. Soporific was ft not favourite over Tho Diver, Leapuki and Naupata, The event proved a fiasco, Morning being the only contestant to complete the course without a mistake, and on his showing it is quite probable the Grand National Hurdle victor of 1913 would still have been returned victorious had everything stood up. Leapuki ran oft at the first obstacle, while boporifio was a bit unfortunate in being crowded off at the second fence of the double brush, in front of tho stand, while later on The Diver and Naupata fell, and ran off respectively, but completed the course for the place* money. Morning mado no mistakes, and as he can be improved upon in condition must be. regarded as a proposition for , Grand National Steeplechase honours in August. | Toki, with Deeley in the saddle, was made a very warm favourito for the Raukawa Hack Handicap, but although woll placed third in the middle stagos ho could not go on when exported to, and failed to gain a place. Miacara and Maltf.irde were both better supported than Hon. J. D. Ormond's candidate Mandoline, a rather diminutive daughter of Hymettus and Mandola. However, she showed the possession of pace and won handily from Black Heart; who also failed to gain expected favour on tho machine. Both first and second horses returned good figures. Miacara looked above herself, apd may do better at Napier Park. - Ardent and Beldame. .'were both better supported than Hvmettius in the Final Handicap, but the latter always looked the winner in running. An inquiry was held at the close into the alleged crowding of Mount Victoria on the rails. However, the placings of the judge finally remained unaltered. and supporters of Hymettius received their dues after a long wait at tho machine windows.
