Tho Auckland Hockey Association's prado championship competitions were continued on the various grounds,' oil Saturday afternoon. Tho weather was fine during tho progress of the cantos, but the conditions were damp underfoot, although the principal ground had dried sufficiently to permit fast play. Most inlerest centred in the AretaUniversity match, which had an important bearing on tho senior championship. The game was an unusual one, no fewer than nino goals boinn scored, while. University established a lead of three goals in , the early stages, and although tho blacks never levelled up thov played determinedly throughout and finished only a point behind their opponents, the score reading 5 goals to 4- There was little between the teams, but the clashing win? forward plav of C. N. Jacobsen and L. L Grice for University made the blues attack much moro dangerous, and lew chances wore missed, while on tho otnor nana the Areta forwards frequently reached the circ'o without result.; Auckland defeated Motin 1 , Eden for the second time, the score being 4 itoals to 2. >■ , ~ ... . UNIVERSITY V. ARETA. The blues were first to show up in an attack following the opening bully end for a, short time the blacks were busy detending. Nothing resulted, however, and alter some play of an uninteresting : nature . thel Aw.a forwards carried through some nice Posing runs in which White, and Thomas were conspicuous. Several times , the ball relied the oirclo, and on a couplo of , br?l Cockerell saved the resulting snots .aM: lianlly, whilo other shots . narrowly t missed 110 goal Jacobsen was conspicuous in some dashes for 'Varsity, the. other sistinu, and one resulted in the defenoe bong entirely drawn, allowing Somen, to shoot successfully into an open goal. p# iS re taliated, and Cockerel! again saved brilliantly, whilo Speight; set-off thei blue forwards again, and the blacks were hard pushed to save further scores. Jacob.en broko away and outpaced the fence,_Baildon hesitated, and the left-wing paled easily. The dashing play of the Varsity forwards kept the atthek going merrily, ho opposing hAlfbacks being unequal to the task of checking. England was noticmiblo lor a determined defence and clever interrontinz. but the opposing forwards swept through in a line, and from a scramble m the circle Gricc netted, giving University a lead of three. Not discouraged by the mftigin the blacks set off to reduce tho lead. and smart work by Preston, and Mogmio placed the team on attack, .but opportunities in the circle were again lost. Areta maintained the attack, and a pais back to Preston MTfl the light-wing tv chiwee, and he scored with a hot shot. Maintaining 111# attack tho blacks made things lively for the blues for some minutes, and just before tuo spell White again goalod. the scoro reading at tho interval: University, 3: Areta, 2. The paco continued fast upon resumption o' ploy, p.nd «arh twin in turn • attacked. Tho Areta forward play, though smart, was cramjjed. and whilo tho <nrclo was frequently reached the defence could not bo penotratcd. Alternate runs by Gricc. Somcrs. and Jacobsen pnread the blues' atinnk. and. the opposing backs had Rre&t difficulty in covering the p-ronnd in the time. Somcrs shot and »nlnced tho bltie« further in th" lead, and a hotly maintained attack enabled Mahoney to add a fifth goal; Strenuous efforts were then mft'lo by Areta to wipo off the deficit which ultimately proved successful,' Thomas notchint a goal. Alternate attacks followed, with the. blacks having tho advantage, and playing with better luck than in the earlier staees e. further coal came to Preston's stick.' Play continued at a fast-pace, to tho call of time, no further score being recorded. and the card road:—

AUCKLAND V., MOUNT EDEN.

Mount Eden was first to attack, but tho obstinato defence of Sloman and Baker preTinted iv scoro boing recorded. ' Play was not very interesting at this stage, too much bunching being , noticonblo. Occasionally a good effort by oitlior side broko tho monotony, with the advantage with Mount Eden, and from a sustained effort Fletcher scored for the browns. Supported by tho backs, tho Auckland forwards then initiated a series of jmilaaghls on the opposing goal, which rosulted in Osborne scoring twice from timely centra. Mount Eden retaliated, and rushes,' headed by Flctchor, were only stopped in time, Sloman again being prominent in defence while Horspool saved in first-class stylo at a critical moment. At half-time the scoro read: Auckland, 2; Mount Eden, 1. : r Play was .of an. even nature i throughout the • greater, portion of the second half. It was not brilliant, however, and the forward movements usually lacked dash, the opposing backs having littlo ,■ trouble in checking. From a. corner Sneddon again goalod for Auckland, and a little lator Mount Eden turned tho'tables, and Fletcher added. tho second point for the browns.
