NEW ZEALAND ESSAYS.
GREAT BRITISH SAILORS PRIZES AWARDED. [FROM OUR ow correspondent. ] London, February 19. New Zealand schools have every reason to feel gratified at the result of the essay competition promoted by the British and Foreign Sailors' Society. The New Zealand scholars have done remarkably well. Colonel Sir Arthur Davidson writes to the society " I am desired by Queen Alexandra to say that Her Majesty will be very pleased that the presentation ot plaques, medals, and souvenirs to the schools of New Zealand, as rewards for their essays, should be inade 111 her name."
The adjudicators report as follows with regard to New Zealand : — North Island : William Ward, Queen's Park school, Wanganui, prize; Gordon Maxwell, Onehunga Convent school, Auckland, highly commended; Clarke Mary Williamson, Tavadale school, Hawke's Bay, and Mart. Martin, Onehunga Convent school, Auckland, prizes (equal). South Island : John T. Brady, Southbridge District High School, prize; James Stuart Church and Harry belwyn Kenrick, Waitaki Boys' High School, both highly commended; I.cslio D. Trotter, also "of this school, commended; Enid Edm Ella Ryburn, middlo school, Invtrcargill, prize"; Muriel Agnes Innes, Marlborough High School, highly commended. The subject was:"Who, in Your Judgment, is the Greatest British Sailor Next to Nelson, and Why Do .You Think So?" The adjudicators state the essays reached a good standard. It is interestin, to note their respective sailor heroes as Drake, Blake, Jervis, Cook, Grenville, Hawke, Cochrane, and Scott.
