FIFTY YEARS AGO.
THE REBEL MAORIS. WAIKATO HEADS THREATENED. (From the Herald of April 6. 1865.) Considerable anxiety has existed at the Waikato Heads during the last few days relative to a report forwarded to the commanding officer to the effect that a body of 600 Maori rebels were within ten miles. In consequence, extra precautions have been taken for the protection of our small community, a picquet of 15 men being on duty till midnight. The extra duty presses "very heavily on the men, as the garrison only consists of half a company of the 14th'Regiment and about a dozen men of other corps attached to the commissariat. Should the rebels favour this portion of the district wjtli a visit they will be warmly received, but at the samo ' time the available force is very inadequate for the protection of lives and property.
