FIGHTING IN MOUNTAINS.
RUSSIAN SUCCESSES.
AUSTRIANS LOSE HEAVILY.
(Received April 3, 2 a.m.)
Petrograd, April 2.
An official communique states that the Russians gained an important success in the Krasna region, west of Simno, between the Niemen and the East Prussian frontier. The enemy rapidly retreated and, vigorously pressing them, the Russians secured very substantial results.
In the Carpathians, after wading in snow up to the loins, climbing almost perpendicular precipices, and hacking through entanglements in the forests, the Russians dislodged the Austrians from their trenches in the Litowiska region. They captured a series of fortified heights in the principal chain of the Beskid Mountains, and surrounded and partially exterminated several Austrian battalions. Towards the Russian frontier town of Chotin, north-east of Czernowitz, the Russians captured 1500 survivors of the Austrian raid. Altogether 5680 prisoners and 14 machine guns were captured in the Carpathians on Tuesday.
