HOUSES WANTED FOR WORKERS,
As the outcome of representations recently made to the Prime Minister in regard to the scarcity of low-rented residences in Pukekohe, suitable for workers, Mr. Massey has sent a communication to the Chamber of Commerce intimating that if applications for workers' dwellings in Pukekohe are forthcoming inquiry will be instituted by the Labour Department with a view of securing a suitable block of land under the Workers' Dwellings Act. It is suggested that the old show ground, which is shortly to be cut up for building sections, and disposed of by the Franklin A. and P. Society, a new site for a larger and more commodious show ground having been secured, would admirably fill requirements for small residences. Pukekohe has at last secured extended telephone hours, the local exchange being now open until 10 p.m. This increased telephone facility should have been granted some months back, when the total number of subscribers passed 100, but the Postal Department seemed reluctant to move in the matter. An agitation was commenced, and the member for the district (Mr. Massey) was interviewed, with the satisfactory result that the longer hours came into force this week. As usual in the winter months the opening between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. of the Pukekohe telegraph office will be suspended as from April 1. In the ordinary course of things, the evening opening will be resumed six months hence, when the volume of telegraph business is considerably swollen by orders for the main' local products, namely, potatoes and" onions. Three new candidates—namely, Messrs. B. H. Andrew, J. Coady, and C. Roadley —have announced {heir intention of standing for membership of the Borough Council at the coming election. At a meeting of the executive of the Franklin A. and P. Society, held on Monday, letters from several of the judges who had acted at tho recent show were read, congratulating the soeietv on the marked excellence of the exhibition and on the capable management. Permission was given the Pukekohe fJolf Club to play over the new showgrounds, and preliminary arrangements were made for getting the new property readv for next year's show. Tlio territory of the Franklin County Council will 'be still further increased as from April 1, on which date the Drury and Paparata Road Boards will cease existence, arrangements having been made for their districts to be merged in tho county.
