UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT.
i ARRIVAL OF VISITORS.
CIVIC RECEPTION TODAY.
! The fourteenth annual tournament of the New Zealand University commences today, when the visitors will be accorded a I civic reception at the Remuera Tennis ; Club's lawns. The visiting teams and | their friends, some 80 in number, arrived j by yesterday morning's express, and were ■ conveyed in motor-cars to various parts I of the city, where they will bo the guests of many citizens.
At tho civic reception, which will be held at 10 a.m., the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. I John Court, will be the chief speaker. Owing to yesterday's downpour, it is possible that the lawn tennis championships will not bo commenced until the afternoon.
One of the chief attractions of the tournament is the debating contest, which will take place in the Town Hall concert chamber at a-quarter to eight o'clock tonight. Tho subject to be discussed will j be : " Should the Principle of an Elective Executive be Substituted for the System I of Party Government at Present Obtaining in New Zealand!" On Sunday a special service for the students will be held in the St. John's ; College Chapel, Tamaki. The athletic | championships, the proceeds from which will be devoted to the Auckland Belgian Relief Fund, will bo held in the Domain on Easter Monday. In the evening a moonlight excursion to Takapuna has been arranged, and on the following night, after the Lwn tennis finals have been ! played, the university dance will be held in the Masonic Hall. The tournament will conclude on Wednesday, when the visitors will be the guests of the Auckland Students' Association at morning tea.
