MOROCCANS AT SOISSONS

GALLANT PAST PLAYED.

ZEAL EXCEEDS DISCIPLINE.

REFUSAL TO RETIRE.

'Received January 20, 2 a.m.)

Paris, January 19.

During the retreat from Soissons some Moroccan troops were posted at Crouy as a rearguard. They allowed the Germans to advance in serried masses until they entered the village, when rifle and machinegun, fire was opened on them from every house. The Germans were unable to find cover and fell in heaps until the streets were full of dead. The enemy then withdrew.

Later they attempted to carry the village from the eastern flank. Three companies of Moroccans, refusing repeated orders to retire, rushed out. A frightful melee ensued, the Moroccans using their bayonets and rifle-butts. They hurled the Germans back and retired under cover of darkness.
