ADVANCE ON ALTKIRCH. 'Received January 20, 2 a.m. I Paris, January if. A. French eye-witness states: — *' Since the sth the allies have consolidated their successes beyond Yser, between Saint Georges and the sea. They have constructed a strong br'dgo over the Yscr to assure their communications. Zouaves, on the 7th, captured a hillock west of LombaertzyoV: and beat off counterattacks.

*' The Germans have since abandoned the attempt to dispute our possession of the bridgehead. Though the flooding of the. Yser shopped the great German offensives in October and November, it did not stop ours.

On the 15th the French gave the British useful assistance at La Bassee, where we are giving the. enemy no peace. After the fighting at La Boisclle on the 10th, the Germans asked for an armistice to pick up their wounded. The allies refused the request, and established themselves in another trench south of La Boiselle.

"''The French line in the Perthes district is now two kilometres (a little over a mile) north of the position occupied on December 21. The siege war continues in the Bois le Pretre, where we are progressing continually.

"The excellent results we have achieved in Upper Alsace have been consolidated. During fierce fighting on the sth at Cernay the Germans captured a trench. Our rifles were choked with mud and it was impossible to fire. We recaptured the trench on the Tth. We arc now progressing further east.
