MARCHING TO DEATH.
ILL-FED TURKISH ARMY. EGYPT READY FOR INVADERS. TURKS ROUTED IN CAUCASUS. BATTLE FOUGHT IN SNOWSTORM. The Turkish array which is being sent to invade Egypt is described in Cairo as likely to display bravery but not capacity. Many of the Turks are starving, and are clad in summer khaki. Their condition is said to be owing to bad organisation rather than lack of supplies. The German officers advised a postponement, but were ordered from Berlin to march on Egypt. One officer describes the army as marching to certain death. Reports from Petrograd state that a three days' battle on the Russo=Turkish frontier was fought in an unceasing snowstorm. It ended in a complete Russian victory. The remnants of the Turkish army are fleeing to Erzerum, in Armenia. Cablegrams from Belgium and France record allied progress in Flanders and the Vosges. There has been a lively engagement near Arras, where a foundry captured by the Germans was immediately retaken by the allies.
