CONTEST IN CITY WEST.

MR. P. RICHARDSON RETIRES.

The probability of a division in the vote which may be polled against Mr. J. H. Bradney, M.P., the Government candidate, in the contest for Auckland West at the coming elections, has resulted in the withdrawal of Mr. Paul Richardson, who announced some weeks ago that he would be a candidate for the seat in the Labour interest. The position has been discussed by the Opposition candidate. Mr. C. H. Poole, and Mr. Richardson, and the latter has conferred with repre sentatives of the various trade unions in Auckland. Decision in the matter was reached by a further conference of trades union officials, at which both candidates were present. As Mr. Poole was not prepared to withdraw his candidature, Mr. Richardson announced that he would retire in favour of the Opposition candidate. This arrangement was unanimously endorsed by the meeting, and it was agreed that the supporters of the Opposition and of the Labour Party should unite in the campaign. Mr. Thomas Gresham is also a candidate for the seat as a supporter of the Opposition. CENTRAL REGISTRY OFFICE. CONVENIENT ARRANGEMENT. A central bureau has been established in Wellington at which qualified persons may make application for registration on the supplementary electoral roll of any of the city or suburban districts. This convenient arrangement was sug gested by Mr. D. McLaren, and at once adopted by the chief electoral officer for the Dominion. Mr. James Hislop. An officer in the Tourist Department has been placed in charge of the bureau in the general post office, and copies of the main rolls for the several districts are being supplied to him as they are published, Electors will be able to inspect any of these rolls at the bureau, and tho officer will enrol any whose names have not been registered. Hayhurst has withdrawn his candidature in the Reform interest for the Temuka seat, owing to ill-health. A meeting of his committee was held to-day, but no announcement was made as to second choice. CANDIDATES' MEETINGS. Supporters of Mr. J. S. Dickson, the official Government candidate for Parnell, will meet in his committee rooms, Manukau and Russell Streets, Parnell, this evening. A meeting of the Hon. F. W. Lang's supporters will be held to-morrow evening in the Mamikau Water Trust Hall, Epsom, for the purpose of forming a committee.
