—— ♦—. CASES OF INTEMPERANCE. BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. An unusually large number of cases of insobriety were dealt with by Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. One first offender was convicted and discharged, and three others were fined 5s each. John Kershaw, Henry Dell, and Walter Poland were each fined 10s. Having committed a nuisance in addition to getting drunk, Frank Swan was sentenced to a month's hard labour. For tho same offence Sydney John Jenkins was fined £2, being given -a week during which to find the money. When William Ward was arrested for drunkenness he indulged in a flow of obscene language. For this offence he was fined £2.

Convicted of being disorderly whilst drunk, and of breaches of their prohibition orders, Arthur Henry Postlewaight was sentenced to a fortnight's imprisonment with hard labour; and Ada Warner was fined £2, with an alternative of seven days in gaol. Hugh McMillan and Denis Tracey, each of whom was convicted of insobriety and of breaking his prohibition order, were fined £1 and £2 respectively the alternatives being three and seven days' hard labour. Hugh Morehyid and Nellie Mills, both of whom had failed to observe the condition of their prohibition orders, were each fined £1.

William Whalan, who was convicted of drunkenness, agreed to go to Roto Roto for a year. Ho had attempted to commit suicide at Whangarei a little time ago, and there was a chance that he would try this again, said the chief detective, if he were allowed to drink. Cycling on the footpath at Mount Albert resulted in Walter Howard and Thomas Hitchings being each ordered to pay 17s 6d costs. For a similar offence a boy was ordered to pay 7s costs, whilst another defendant was convicted and discharged as his was only a technical breach of the by-law.

For allowing his horse to wander at large at Mount Albert, Thomas Wade was ordered to pay 17 6d costs. Frank Blackniore, who drove his vehicle at too fast a pace round a corner, was fined 5s and 7s costs, wiiilst Sydney Thomas Lewis, who " cut a corner, was fined 5s and 13s costs. Having left his motor-car standing in Newton Road without lights, Murdo Mclver was ordered to pay 14s costs
