TRAMWAY EXTENSION.
WORK AT MOUNT ALBERT. The extension of the tramway service from the present terminus at Morningside to Mount Albert has been commenced, though tho construction of the new tracks lias been delayed by the slow progress in the formation of tho roadway, i'lie arrangements made between the Mount Albert Borough Council and the Tramways Company provided that the road enouJd be improved before the company began its construction works, but owing to the disturbance of financial conditions the council has not been able to obtain funds to prosecute its works with the usual expedition. Arrangements were made- with the State Advances Department for a loan of £10.500, but when the war broke out the council was asked to wait until more pressing commitments had betn satisfied. By utilising its general funds the council has been able to. proceed witn the work, and 30 men are at present employed upon it. ' Advice has been received that the first instalment of the loan, £8000, will be available shortly, ana it is estimated that this sum will be sufficient to complete the road improvements, which include any excavations required for the tramway. The extension will be" a milo in. length, and the new terminus will bo within two chains of the ballast line crossing near the Mount Albert station. A double track will be made, and a considerable quantity of material has been delivered in readiness lor the work of construction. The erection of poles along the sides of the road tor the overhead system has been proceeding during several weeks past. When the extension is completed the third section will be extended to St. Luke's Road, and there will be a fourth section to the terminus.
