OBJECT OF FRENCH ADVANCE ON MULHAUSEN.

BREAKING UP PRUSSIANS' OBSERVATION STATION.

STRONG GERMAN ARMY CONCENTRATING.

WILL ENDEAVOUR TO SEIZE CREST OF THE VOSGES.

(Beceired August 13, 11.35 p.m.)

« Paris. August 13.

The French retreat from Mulhausen was well carried out. The advance upon Mulhausen was merely for the purpose of breaking up the German observation station.

The proportion of the forces engaged was four Germans to one Frenchman. The German field artillery was far inferior to that of the French, the bursting of their shrapnel being indifferent.

It is believed that a strong German army is concentrating to seize the crest along the line of the Vosges. Whoever holds this crest will

dominate Southern Alsace.

An official report, published in Paris, says the Germans bombarded Pont-a-Mousson with heavy artillery from a considerable distance.

The shells fell in the streets of the town, and killed and wounded many of the inhabitants besides wrecking many houses.
