TYRANNY IN BELGIUM. SLAUGHTER OF INNOCENTS. PEASANTS AND PRIEST SHOT. (Received August 12, 9.10 p.m.) Brussels, August 11. • Germans near Verviers ordered the inhabitants who were of a war age to assemble. On this being done they chose 17 and shot them. Thirty peasants at Berneau were similarly killed. The Germans made a priest stand against the wall of his church and shot him. FRENCH VILLAGES BURNED OUTRAGES IN POLAND. MANY CIVILIANS KILLED, I Paris, August 11. Several outrages by German troops are officially reported. While the inhabitants of a frontier village called Afflevillo were at church a" party of Uhlans poured petroleum on the houses and set fire to them. The village was destroyed. A similar*outrage. is reported to have occurred in the Limhurg Province. < . An eye-witness , states that the Mayor of Kalisz, in Poland, was nearly beaten to death upon the orders of a German commander. The messenger of the* Town Council was shot for taking a. mattress and pillow to tho imprisoned Mayor. The manager of the local treasury was also shot. The Germans hold the principal inhabitants as hostages, and many; residents have been killed. The Grand Duchess of Luxemburg personally protested against tho entrance of German troops. . An officer brutally bade her go home, and drew his revolver. Tho Grand Duchess withdrew, announcing that silo would telegraph the facts to tho Kaiser.
