SCIENCE OF TOWN PLANNING.
INTERESTING LECTURE PROMISED
I Tub mission of Mr. W. R. Davidge, ' F. 5.1., A.R.1.8.A., A.M.I.C.E. (London , County Council) and Mr. Charles C. Reade /{organiser of the Australasian town planjning tour) in favour of town planning, is j arousing considerable interest throughout ' the Dominion. Mr. Reade has spent a j busy month preparing for the reception 'of his distinguished colleague, and has : been inundated with enquiries and rei quests for lectures. " The interest in ; town planning," he gays, "is a fair in- | dication that many people in New ZeaI land are eager to see their towns and cities progress on more comprehensive lines and with a eater consideration for civic attractions, orderliness, and beauty. Too manv of oar towns straggle into oxiftence along the lines of an old-fashioned checker-board plan. The oonsequence is . their appearance is often monotonous and characterless.
"To remedy this, it is essential that they should be acquainted with what town planning has done and is doing in England and Germany, in France, America, and other countries. It is also essential that they should realise the tremendous i burden and strain put upon the cities of other countries through neglecting to look j ahead and avoid the evils of ill-controlled growth, congestion and over-speculation in j land."
The opening lecture (which is free) by both delegates will take place at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 6, at the Town Hall concert chamber. The lecture, "Town Planning for New Zealand," will be illustrated with over 1000 pictures and diagrams, giving a bird's-eye view of the whole topic.
