MEDICAL SCHOOL.
"AUCKLAND'S JUST CLAIMS."
VIEWS OF THE MAYOR.
PUBLIC MEETING CALLED.
The proposal emanating from Dr. A. Challinor Purchas that a medical school should be established in Auckland, in connection iwth' the university, is warmly supported by the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr), who. lias called a public meeting for Thursday night next at the concert chamber of the Town Hall, to discuss the subject.
Referring to the matter yetserday, Mr. Parr said he thought Auckland had strong claims to a medical school. The population of the city and suburbs alone was now about one-ninth of that of the whole Dominion. Moreover, Auckland was the most important seaport town in New Zealand, which fact tended to make it interesting from tlie hospital point of view. It- was well known that at the local hospital there was clinical material that did! not exist in any other city hospital in the Dominion. With a big population like ours, there was. unfortunately, a variety and extent of disease which, nevertheless, from the point of view of a medical school, would be of the greatest assistance for purposes of research. The Mayor said he couid see no valid reason why the young men of Auckland desiring to become doctors should have to travel to Dunedin to obtain their medical education. Most impartial medical men would agree that this city afforded, from most points of view, the best facilities as a centre for a medical school.
" We cannot allow the mere accident of Dunedin having a medical school, lavishly subsidised by the Government, to override any longer our just claims in this direction." concluded the Mayor.
