PLAYMATES WITNESS DEATH.

[BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION,] Foxton, Thursday. A BOT named Stanley William Gay, 104 years of age, fell off a jetty at the Heads yesterday while playing. The tide was running out strongly at the time, and the body was carried out to sea. Several playmates witnessed the accident. Deceased's parents reside at the seaside. MAN NEARLY DROWNED. Matherson, employed as a bargeman by the Northern Steamship Company, had a narrow escape from drowning yesterday evening. He was on a barge, being towed up the Waihou River, and by some means tripped and fell overboard. Although he could swim, he was carried away by the swift current and was soon in difficulties. Mr. J. Silcock, agent for the Northern Steamship Company, who was on board, divested himself of his coat, and boots and went to "the rescue, but was unable to help much. Then Captain Adlam, who was in charge of the launch towing the barge, jumped over with all his clothes on and succeeded in bringing Matherson to safety. It was, however, some time before Matherson came round and artificial respiration had to be resorted to. NEW BRIGHTON FATALITY. RECOVERY OF BODY. [BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] # Christchtjech, Thursday. The body of George Morris, who was drowned in the safety area whilst bathing in the surf at New Brighton on Monday, was recovered at about two o'clock this afternoon on the New Brighton side of Sumner estuary, by Constable Hampton, of Sumner. The body was taken to the Christchurch morgue, and an inquest was held to-night. A verdict was returned that Morris was accidentally drowned. INFANT'S DEATH. FALL INTO BOILING WATER. [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN Of Taihape, Thursday. An inquest was held at Raetihi yesterday concerning the death of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hall, of Waipnna. Evidence was given to the effect that on Monday Mrs. Hall was engaged in the wash-house, the door of which was boarded to keep the children out. One of the children climbed over the board and fell into a bucket of boiling water, which upset and scalded him. Medical evidence showed that the scalds extended over onethird of the child's body, death ensuing on Thursday. A verdict of accidental death by scalding, no blame being attachable to anyone, was returned.

HOLIDAY MISHAPS.

MINOR INJURIES SUSTAINED.

A boy named Albert Ernest Tremain, 14 years of age, residing in Church Street, Northcote, was admitted to the hospital at noon yesterday, suffering from a broken leg. He was driving'with' his father to a picnic, and when changing from the front to the back seat of the vehicle," his coat was taught in the wheel, and he was pulled over the splash-board. In the course of one of the jumping competitions at the Te Aroha show yesterday, a well-known rider, Mr. Mauri Crimminfi, through is horse failing at a hurdle, was thrown violently to the'ground, and was immediately conveyed to the pavilion. His injuries were of a, minor nature.

A man, who was fishing from the end of the Queen's Wharf yesterday morning, by some means got a two-inch hook imbedded in his finger, the barb penetrating to the bone. After several vain attempts to.remove the hook, the man sought the assistance of the water police at the casualty room on the wharf. The finger was then opened up, the barb broken off, and the remainder of the hook easily removed. The operation was a painful one, but was skilfully performed, and after the wound had been dressed, the man returned to his home.
