NEW MAGISTRATE.
MR. E. W. BURTON CON-
GRATULATED.

Wellington, Thursday. Me. E. W. Burton, the recently appointed stipendiary magistrate, occupied the Bench at the Magistrate's Court this morning. Mr. Burton, who was formerly a member of the legal firm of Messrs. Burton and Hammond, Auckland, will remain in Wellington for a fortnight to assist in magisterial work prior to leaving to take up his appointment in the Central Otago district.
Before the commencement of the hearing of a civil case at the Court this morning Mr. Burton was congratulated upon his recent elevation to the magisterial Bench. On behalf of the legal profession, Mr. H. F. Von Haast extended congratulations to Mr. Burton, and in wishing him every success in his new sphere of operations, assured him of the support and cooperation of the members of the profession.
Mr. Burton, in reply, humorously mentioned that after 33 years of practice he would have to learn that there are two sides to every case. He desired to thank the members of the legal profession for their welcome apd congratulations, and assured them that with their co-operation he would endeavour to do his duty as it should be done.
