DOCKING ACCOMMODATION.

NEW SLIPWAY AUTHORISED.

The Auckland Harbour Board met yea- <■ terday. Present : Messrs. J. K. Gunson l (in the chair), C. Bagley, W. B. Leyland, H. R. Mackenzie, G R. Hutchinson, H. D. Heather, A. J. Entrican, E. W. Alison, H. H. Adams, P. Virtue, and J. Fisher. . - The committee which had been set up to go into the matter, of docking accommodation presented its report. The report said that the committee had discussed the question of a floating dock, but considered the; capital cost and the cost of maintenance to be too great. > The committee recommended (a) That in consideration of the engineer's estimate, the 600-ton slipway— which the necessary order-in-council bad been issued—tie forthwith built and equipped on the site adjoining the present 200-ton slipway at Beaumont Street; (b) that the engineer be authorised to make the necessary improvements to the present 200-ton slipway to make it available for small coasting boats and the board's own plant and (c) that tenders be immediately called for the necessary hauling gear, etc., and that the chairman and the engineer be authorised to deal with the same. The recommendation was adopted. In view of the representations having already received consideration, letters from the New Zealand Shipowners' Federation reference to additional dock and slipway accommodation were received.

FAOILITIES AT DKVONPOBT. TWO JETTIES TO BE BUILT; ; On the recommendation of the committee which had investigated the matter : of dredging a channel to Devonport Wharf, it was decided that in view of the fact that the board's plant was fully engaged elsewhere for some time, the question of dredging the :-: 'channel to Devonport Wharf be deferred' for 12 months, when the question as , to .the board's policy in relation to wharfage accommodation at Devonport, viz., whether there should be one central wharf, or whether one of the four schemes '•■'fab-.' mitted by the engineer should;; be adopted, could be considered. The board authorised - the commencement of the work of widening Victoria Wharf J so as to enable better division and control , of traffic, also the construction f 4 two jetties. In connection with the latter the board made a stipulation that; the Borough Council must undertake to form the road approaches. .« ]! : ■.

STANLEY BAY WHARF. ACCOMMODATION ADEQUATE. The question /of"alterations.-'.'to the Stanley Bay .Wharf,was before the hoard. The chairman presented figures showing that the heavy traffic over the -wharf was chiefly one way. It had been found that the existing facilities at Stanley Bay were sufficient for the present time at any rate. engineer's REPORT.

y The engineer (Mr. W. H. Ham©r) reported that a deep ; berth was S being dredged on the west side .of Queen Street Wharf. Steady progress was being i : made in the Hobson Street "\ to Nelson,- Street reclamation, also on- the Mechanics' Bay reclamation. The Hobsoh;, Street - vehicular landing-bridge had been ' (successfully tested, and was now being placed in position. ■„■ The jetties would be ready for traffic by September 1. The/road approach waa being completed. "f.. The berth at the Northcote vehicular landing was being deepened. Wires were now being run by the Telegraph Department to the time-ball on the Ferry Building.

MATTER OF RENEWALS.

The Marine ■ Department wrote stating that although it had not been the practice to refer matters of renewals of wharf licenses to harbour boards. in future, ! applications for licenses would be submitted to the board before the matters were dealt with by the Department.

: MISCELLANEOUS. WHARF AT TAMAKI. Letters -were received from the Manukau Ounty Council and. the Pakuranga; Road .3oard asking permission to; erect a, jetty '.it Buckland's, inside Tamaki Heads. The i:iatter was referred to committee. '/ In reference to the proposed , erection of. a drinking trough for horses, the Auckland City Council intimated that : the site which the board had recommended ; was ' roost unsuitable, and it ; suggested: a.
