FERRY BOAT ENGINEERS.

.. SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE. A full settlement was arrived at by; the Conciliation Council yesterday in ; the dispute between the ferry companies and their engineers; The commissioner (Mr. T. , Harle >■ Giles) presided, ;and; ; the assessors were Messrs. A. Alison, '•)J;;' D. Douglas and E. M. Coleman for the employers, and Messrs. :'■ T. Cain, .'. Nixon and W. N. Entwistle for the employees. Mr. C. Grosvenor, in conjunction with Messrs. E. W. Alison, J. B. Bushill and J. Kerr, appeared on behalf of the ferry companies. . • .' ~ As far as wages are concerned, it was decided to increase those of engineers from £3 103 to £3.153 a week, while for casual labour Is 6d per hour instead of Is 4d is to be paid. No change has been made in the hours of labour, which remain at 62£ per week, but no engineer is to be employed for more than 12 hours in a day without being paid overtime rates, which are increased from Is 4d to Is 6d an hour. All engineers are to have rt least one Sunday off duty in every .six, and the number of holidays on full pay has been increased from eight to ten days annually after one year's service. The award will hold good for three years, and will come into operation on September 1. .
