AUCKLAND EXHIBITION.
BRITISH " BAND REFUSED.
!An unsatisfactory reply has been received by the secretary of the Auckland Industrial Exhibition in regard to the proposal that the services of a British regimental band should 'be obtained for the Exhibition. A request was made /to the Imperial authorities through the Governor, who forwarded a despatch on the subject on September 10. Yesterday advice was received from Major Collins, AdjutantGeneral of the New Zealand Forces, stating that the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Harcourt, has cabled to the Governor that the Army Council has given careful consideration to the request made by the Exhibition commissioners, but regrets that owing to the fact that an absence of five months would be necessary the services of a band cannot be spared for so long a period. , It was hoped that a regimental band would form a novel and highly effective attraction at the Exhibition. Further consideration will be given to the matter by the executive of the Exhibition at a meeting on Friday afternoon. ' The Finance Committee of the Exhibition will also meet on Friday afternon.
