MR, ROOSEVELT CLAIMS A

, • : VICTORY.

By Telegraph.— Association.— Copyright

New York, September 10. The Republicans have captured the Governorship of "the State of Maine by a small majority. The results of the elections for other offices are still doubtful.

The Progressives controlled the Republican machine throughout the contest. Acting on Mr. Roosevelt's advice they did not run a candidate, the split? being postponed until after the State elections.

Although losing the Governorship, the Democrats are believed to be sufficiently powerful to secure control of other offices.

(Received September 11, 8 p.m.) New York, September 11.

Mr. Roosevelt claims that the result of the Maine election is a victory for the Progressive party.

The new Governor, the- ex-Presi-dent states, is really an adherent of his party. That understanding led to his decision not to contest the elections against the regular Republic cans, who also claimed the successful candidate as an adherent of" their party." •'!
