THE TEACHER AND THE CANE.
CANTERBURY SYSTEM
[BY telegraph.—press association.] CKEJSTCHORCH, Friday. Ax important change in the system of corporal punishment has been approved by the North Canterbury Education Board. Hitherto the case of the strap has been, restricted to the headmasters and the mistresses, with the provision that in schools having an average attendance of 400 the headmasters can recommend, with the committee's approval, that the assistants should have the necessary authority. It was represented to the Board that these regulations resulted in most of the responsibility for corporal punishment being thrown ; upon the head teacher.
The Board has recognised this and has made alterations under which, without any regard to the size of the school, the head
teacher may recommend a trustworthy assistant to the Board to be authorised to inflict corporal punishment. The existing precaution still holds good that the approval of the committee must be secured before the application goes before the Board.
