ALLEGED ASSAULT.

Waihi, Wednesday. The action against George and Beatrice Dennis charged with assaulting Gcorgina Dennis, mother of the male defendant, was continued before Mr. F. J. Burgess, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court last evening.
Emma Arnold, who lived in close proximity to the house occupied by defendants, was called for the prosecution, and in the course of her evidence said she had seen the female defendant chasing her mother-in-law with a strap, and had seen her (defendant.) hustle the old lady into the scullery and strike her with something. Witness had also seen the mother-in-law about the place crying and with blood on her face. Dr. Craig, under examination, eaid he had visited defendants' house. Georgina Dennis was fully clad, but was wearing old garments and did not appear to be well nourished. She wae physically and mentally weak and did not seem capable of connected thought for any period of time. During the last years she had in his opinion failed considerably both mentally and physically. Witness described tho bruises found on tho body of Mrs. Dennis, senr., and stated that when asked tho cause of the injuries she had, after some incoherent mumbling, replied: "Beattio did it.'' Under cross-examination Dr. Craig said ho would not swear that tho bruises found on the old lady's body wero not caused by falls. A person in her condition would bo weak on her legs. The case was adjourned until March 11.
