THE SHIPPING DISPUTE,
SEEKING A SETTLEMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Wellington-, Saturday. After a lengthy discussion yesterday between parties representing the Shipowners' Federation and the officers of coastal vessels concerned In the .Merchant Service Guild dispute, a committee was set up with .Mr. P. alley as president to consider the question or the hours of work as regards officers. The guild lought strenuously to have the masters and officers taken together, but on the federation guaranteeing that in the event of a settlement being made in the officers' dispute it would undertake to meet the masters within a week to discuss an increase of wages, the guild's representatives gave way.. The committee met last evening. Mr. Halley submitted certain proposals on the question of overtime, which is the main point of the dispute. These proposals will be laid before the Merchant Service Guild and the shipowners to-morrow morning.
POSITION IN AUCKLAND. Although the strike of ships' officers which has occurred in the South has not spread to Auckland, there has been a movement here to bring about improved conditions. Demands were made, but their presentation to the Conciliation Council was delayed. In view of the dissatisfaction aroused over the award made in Wellington it was deemed advisable by local officers to postpone going on with the demands, and the application has been withdrawn. The shipping companies affected have filed an application- for the renewal of the agreement that expired this year.
