A DANGEROUS ROAD-END.

UNPROTECTED HIGH CLIFF.

JURY ASKS FOR GOOD FENCE.

Ax inquest was held yesterday morning into the death of Dudley Cooper, a child three years old, who fell over a cliff at the seaward end of New-street on Friday. The jury visited the scene of the accident, from which the residence of the child's parents is distant about 600 yds. The street is ended by a cliff about 40ft high. There is a rank growth of convolvulus, over which the child fell. The spot is at present fenced off from Londonstreet, which crosses New-street, by a post-and-rail fence through which children can pass. , The evidence of Dr. A. C. Owen showed that the base of the skull was fractured. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. A rider was added as follows:—"The jury desire to direct the attention of the City Council as follows: That in their opinion, in order to render the lower portion of New-street absolutely safe, an iron fence should be. erected by the City Council where the wooden post-and-rail fence now stands; and that other dangerous points are situated at streeta in this neighbourhood other than at New-street."
