The latest phase of the -weekly halfholiday question is that the supporters of Saturday have withdrawn their requisition, evidently recognising that the weight of public opinion is against them, and the requisition in favour of Thursday- afternoon being retained as the weekly half-holiday will : alone bo X presented to the Borough Council at its meeting to be held for the purpose of fixing the half-holiday.. In this district, arrangements lor ; tho formation of three associations have practically been completed by \ three firms of land and estate agents. The members of these associations are men of -the right type, so thai the outcome of the innovation should be good to all concerned. Captain Rimmer, of the local Salvation Army corps, has received notice of his transference to Levin. This officer has shown conspicuous ability in the discharge of his duty, and is bound.to attain to high rank. Adjutant and Mrs Armstrong, 'of the Whangarei branch, will succeed Captain and Mrs. Rimmer. POKENO. [from our own correspondent.} Mr. Jas. Brown, after being in business for 36 years in Pokeno, lias disposed of his connection to his sons. To mark the retirement of an old and respected townsman, about 200 of the residents met Mr. Brown at a social and dance in the Pokeno Hall, and bade him farewell. WHITFORD. [from our" own correspondent.] The arrival of the Minerva, a new steamboat just, completed by Mr. C. Bailey,. Jan., for the Clevedon S.N. Company, to run between Whitford and Auckland, was made the occasion of a pleasing incident on Monday last. A social was held in the WhitfoM Hall, to which Messrs. Could rev and Spencer, the respective captains of the Hirers and the Minerva wore specially invited, for the purpose of presenting' them with tokens of the respect in which they are held by the local population. The presentations,; which consisted of marine binoculars, were made on behalf of the Whitford people, by Mr. Herbert Shaw. About 150 residents attended the social, which, owing to the complete arrangements made by Mr. John Granger, a director of tho Clevedon S.N. J30., was very, successful.
