BOWLING.

PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT.

PONSONBY WINS PENNANT.

PAIRS AND SINGLES. MATCHES.

The Auckland Provincial Bowling Association's Christmas carnival completed one statie of the proceedings yesterday, the pennant match (champion fours) being decided. Sectional play was finished on Thursday, and the winners of six sections yesterday played vo rounds of semi-finals and a final on the Auckland green. Five city and on« country team (Sampson's, of Waihi) were left in the semi-finals, and some keen bowling resulted. The final was fought out between a Ponsonby Club tour, skipped by Maxwell Walker, and an Auckland Club four, skipped by Tyler. Mcxwell Walkers four won by 22 points to 12., after a keenly contested game, which was only won on the 19th head. Last season the pennant was won by a Hamilton Club four, skipped by Eook.cs. The team defended the title this tournament, but were knit-en in sectional play. The winning four has played exceptionally well throughout the tournament, and they were the only section winners who did not suffer a loss. Maxwell Walker, who skipped the team in place of the nominated skin (.1. Veale), who played third, has earned five admiration of all bowlers by his consistent play in all departments of the game. This is tho first occasion on which tho pennant has been won by the Ponsonby Club.

The champion pairs match was commenced yesterday in eight sections, and play was in an advanced, state last, evening; in fact, on tho Ponsonby green the E section was completed, being won by Harking and Gardner, ot Ponsonby Club. On most of the other greens five rounds were completed. The renin ining rounds will be played this morning. Tho semi-finals and finals will be played at Ponsonby green this afternoon, play comencing at 1.30 o'clock. The champion singles matches will bo commenced at nine a.in. on Monday, and it is anticipated that these matches will be completed, and the tournament brought to a conclusion on Tuesday afternoon. Tho tournament this year is making good progress, despite tho very much larger entries. This is due in a measure to the excellent organisation of tho association, but is also contributed to by the excellent weather conditions of tho week. The greens have been very keen, and as a result some excellent bowling has been witnessed.

THE PENNANT MATCH. SEMI-FINALS (FIRST ROUND). Mount Eden— Gariand, Saxton, Railkin (skip)—l9, v. Grey Lynn—A. J. Black, Baildon, V. Casey, N. Bell (skip)—ls. This was a close and interesting game. Rankin opened with a three, but was caught by Bell at the 3rd head. Rankin scored well to the Bth head, where a two by Bell put the teams ail square, seven each. The Mount Eden team "sot into the lead with a three the next head, but this was neutralised at the 12th head, the teams being all square, 11 each. Bell scored one on the next, and Rankin two at the 14th. The Mount Eden team was never headed, Anally winning an exciting game, 19 points to 15. Auckland—Eversleigh, Diddams, Keesing, Tyler (skip)—2B. v. Waihi—Flett, Williams, Vercoe, Sampson (skip)— The Waihi team started well with three and one, but Tyler's team put on 3, 2, 2, 1 on successive heads, and were eight to four at the 6th head. Sampson scored three at ihe 7th, and then Tyler scored 1, 2, 4, 5 at successive heads, and waa 20 to 7 at tin- 11th head, finally winning by 28 points to 17. Bves: Walker (Ponsonby), Wukerley (Rocky Nook). SEMI-FINALS (SECOND ROUND). Ponsonby—M. Casey, J. McLeod, J. Veale. Maxwell Walker (skip)—l9, v. Mount EdenMiller, Garland, Saxton, Rankin (skip)—l7. This was a ding-dong go, which roused no end of enthusiasm. The Mount Eden four led oft' with two and one, which Ponsonby equalised at the 3rd head. One to Ponsonby at the fourth was replied to with two by Rankin at the sth, and lie led: 5—4. A three to Walucr next head gave him the lead, which was reduced by one at the next. Ponsonby then took a fancy to the jack, and scored a succession of 1, 2, 1, 2, and at the lit head the score was: Ponsonby 13, Mount Eden 6. At the 14th head Walker still led, 15—8, and then on tilt next a five to Rankin considerably reduced the gap, and scoring on three successive heads the score read at the 19th head: Rankin 17, Walker 16. The latter, however, scored two and one on the last two heads, and won the match by 19 to 17.

Auckland—Eversleigh. Inddams?, Keesing, Tyler (skip)— v. Rocky Nook—Gribble, Morton. College, Wakerley (skip)—l3. This game was remarkable for Tyler's fine recovery. He opened the scoring' with a two, but Wakerley's four did most of the scoring tip to the seventh head, when the scores read: Wakerley 9. Tyler 4. Four successive singles to Tyler, one to Wakerley, and then 2, 2, 3, 1, 1. 1, 2 in succession, and Tyler saw the card road Tyler 18 to 10 at the 19t.h head. Wakerley scored three at the 20th and Tyler two at the 21st head, and the game ended: Tyler 20, Wakerley 13.

THE FINAL. Ponsonby—M. Casey, J. McLeod, J. Veale, Maxwell Walker (skip)— v. Auckland Eversleigh. Diddams, Keesing. Tyler (skip)— 12. The final between Walker's and Tyler's fours provided an exciting; go right up to the 19th head, where a four to Walker"settled Tyler's chance. The Ponsonhy four put up four points at the first two heads. Tyler one at the third, and Walker three at the fourth, the scores then being Walker 7to 1. Tyler then began to make headway, scoring 1. 2. 1, lon successive heads. On the 9th head Walker scored four and followed with a single, and he thus had a lead of six at the 10th head. Tyler's team were playing a good game, and got two at the 11th, lost one at the 12tli. and then scoring 1, 2. 1 in succession were only one down at' the 15th head. The game was being watched by a large crowd, and was very exciting at this stage. Both rinks were playing well. Every scoring shot was loudly applauded. Walker, who was drawing and driving splendidly, scored three singles in succession, and at the 18th head the card read: Walter 16, Tyler 12. At. the 19th head — long or.fe—Tyler's lead failed to jet near the jack, and his second and third, who had played grand games, also failing to score, Walker was given an open head, and he packed both bowls on the Jack. Tyler's drive missed, and a four to Walker practically decided the game. Next head Walker's lead and second sent down three " touchers." and Keesincr. in endeavouring to make a " dead head." drove the jack into the ditch. Walker won the head by two, and with it the Auckland provincial champion fours and the pennant for season 1910-11. It was a grand game of bowls, and cheers were given for the winners and riuiners-up. Walker's rink went through the tournament without a loss.
