PELORUS JACK.

For the last three weeks "Pelorus Jack" has not been seen by anxious passengers on tho Nelson boats, and in the minds of some fears Lave been entertained lest he had been the victim of foul play, or had died from natural causes. But a fish with am Act of Parliament for itself could hardly be expected to be on duty unceasingly. Doubtless he has been feeling the increased strain of the summer traffic, and ho has decided to take his vacation at the head of Admiralty Bay in peace and quietness. Captain Crawford, of the Pateena, informed a Nelson Evening Mail representative last week that fishermen and others had told him that "Pelorus Jack" could be seen frolicking about in the place indicated. _ In some instances lie had been swimming closely round the fishing boats. Frequent passengers by the steamers know that "Jack" is seen anywhere between the Pass and the head of Pelorue Sound, a stretch of several miles, When last seen, Captain Crawford avid he was meeting tho steamers well towards the Sounds, so that his present quarters are some eight or nine miles away. "Pelorus Jack" has been known to go. for these holidays before, and doubtless after a good rest he will be found again following the steamers, to the amusement of all 011 board. Ho chooses the cuttlefish type of diot. and no doubt it becomes necessary for him to go in search of food at certain periods of the year.
