ALLEGED THEFTS.

THREE CASES REMANDED.

Three cases of alleged thefts occupied the attention of Messrs. Geo. Martin, W. J. Macdermott, And J. E. Wilkinson, J.P.'s, at too Police Court, yesterday morning.

Edward Barrett was charged with stealing a watch and chain, valued at £3, from another man. He was remanded till next Wednesday, bail being allowed. A charge of the theft of jewellery, valued at £19, was preferred against Henry Barton. It is alleged thai Barton entered a jeweller's shop at Rotorua, and committed the theft, after which he disappeared, but was caught a few days ago. He was remanded for eight days.

A man, who gave hi i name as Richard Degenhardt, but who is better known to the police as Richard Anderson, was arrested at the Ellerslie racecourse oil Thursday, on a charge of stealing a totalisator ticket, valued at 10s. It is stated tho accused filled the role of pickpocket, and appropriated the ticket from a- man who was about to present it for payment. Accused was remanded till Wednesday, bail being granted.

IMPRISONMENT FOR ASSAULT. George Harrison did not agree with Archibald Chalmers when the latter suggested that Harrison had a habit of nob working, and of other discreditable practices. As the result of a. discussion on this subject, Harrison struck Chalmers several times. Police assistance arrived, and Harrison was taken in charge. At this ho became very violent, and resisted the policeman and damaged his shako. He was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. MISCELLANEOUS. A disreputable-looking woman named Annie Roach was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for committing an indecent act on Constitution Hill. On charges of drunkenness, Ellen Cairns was fined 10s, or 48 hours, and was prohibited. Similar penalties were inflicted on Charles Rasmussen and James Patterson Lauder; Frederick Watterstrand was lined £1 and prohibited; two first offenders were convicted and discharged, and a prohibition order was taken out against another first offender.

For being disorderly while drunk, Joseph McHugh was fined 10s, or 48 hours, and prohibited. For being drunk, and procuring liquor while prohibited, John Milne was fined £2, or teven days, and Christopher Hampton was also fined £2, or seven days.
