A PUNT ACCIDENT.
♦ HORSES DROWNED AT HUNTLY. [by telegraph. —OWN correspondent.] Httntly, Saturday.' ; A three-horse waggon, belonging to Mr. F. G. Jackson, of Ngaruawahia, and I driven by a man. named Cowan, occasion* ! ed great consternation among those who : were in the punt and in the steamer Freetrader, while - crossing the Waikato, en route for the races,' to-day. •"When l the driver, with whom were three other men, essayed to drive ashore on the western platform the horses began to play up, and backed into' the punt. The force, of th© impact drove the.unweildy craft away from the landing, with the result that the three horses backed into -the river, leaving the waggon dangling on the edge of the punt. Two of the animals were drowned. The men were also immersed, and a considerable time was occupied in getting the cart free from the punt. When the waggon was recovered one of the shafts was broken. - The team was a valuable one, th©; driver's intention being to ply-for hire between the ; landing and' the racecourse. , The general opinion at Huntly is that the accident is another argument in favour of the speedy erection of the bridge.
