MR. J. HERRICK.

THE BUSY GROCERY. It is necessary during the festive season for the'up-to-date grooer not only to keep a heavy stock, but to bo of a philosophical turn of mind. Wero ho to allow himself to get flustered over trifles, such as a rush of business, it might bo fatal to his interests. In Mr. J. Herriok, grocer and provision dealer, of tho Colonial Store, 79. Karangahape Road (a few doors from Pitt-street.), we havo tho necessary combination of philosophy and acumen, Hence, though Mr. Herrick is so busy already that he is fully occupied, and though his stock is plentiful, ho is prepared to fill any number of extra Christmas orders. (At this busy grocery a tremendous trado is done in hams, of which a groat number are just at present displayed. Mr. Herrick is a buyer of hams by the hundred, and whereas last year ho sold 700, this year the indications are that lie will' break that record. In his provision department is also to bo seen a goodly array of choice bacon, noted all over the country, owing to tho enormous outside trade therein that the establishment does. As a matter of fact, Mr. Horrick is famed for his bacon, and for his old cheeso. • He is now showing a very special lino of Cheshire choose, manufactured in the Dominion from a genuine Cheshire recipe, and specially laid in store for tho Christmas season. This is a beautiful rich creamy cheese, delicious alike to look at and to taste. At no other place in Auckland can the same make bo obtained, Mr. Herrick having secured tho whole output of the manufacturer. Two special lines in butter are a choice table brand at lOd per lb, and a particularly fine factory butter at Is per lb. Amongst the attractive edibles exhibited in this shop and in the window may bo mentioned a big line of Christmas plum puddings and cakes, and a wonderful line of mixed biscuits at 3d perlb, of which Mr- Herrick sells some 3cwt a week. Tinned fruits and jellies, Tucker's "Jellona and Cream," and all varieties of figs and dried fruits, prunes, nuts, and chocolates havo places on the well-stocked shelves. Almonds and raisins, as indispensable to the Christmas table as , the very turkey and plum pudding themselves, are to be obtained at reasonable prices, and also tho best quality of fruit syrups for hot weather beverages. During business hours a lady attendant dispenses cereal tea and "Vim" health foods. Tho anxious housewife, who looks upon her grocer as a universal provider at tho festive season, may safely entrust her orders to Mr. Herrick, who is able and ready to relieve her of her cares in provisioning tho house to withstand all assaults upon tho commissariat.
