Melbourne, November 15. The conditions were perfect on Saturday for the Wilding-Brookes match, which was won by the former, and for skill and excitement it approached the famous Davis- cup contest when Wright (America) beat Brookes. , The Victorian won the first two sets easily, but from that out Wilding, playing magnificently, held his opponent, who in the closing stages visibly tired. The match occupied two hours, the last set taking 40 minutes. Brookes was not just at.his best, wanting that unerring precision which earned him the championship of the world. Wilding was undoubtedly the best man on the day, and won the great contest fairly on his merits. He played even better than when he defeated the American (Alexander) for the Davis cup.
