LIONEL BROUGH. By Telegraph.— Association-—Copyright. , ; London,' November 8. The death is announced of Mr. Lionel Brough, the well-known actor, in his 63rd year. . The -late Mr. Lionel Brough, who was the eon of Barnabas Brough, a dramatic author of repute, commenced his-career in the publishing offices of the Illustrated London News, . afterwards joining the business departments of y the Daily Telegraph and Morning Star. Then the call of the stage came to him, and in 1854 he made his first appearance at the Lyceum in "Prince Pretty Pet." After four years he returned to newspaper work on ' the staff of the Morning Star, but five years later he made 60 successful an appearance with an amateur company that he was offered a regular engagement in Liverpool, which he accepted. " He made his first big London success with Toole in " Dearer than Life/' in 1868. Thenceforward he appeared in innumerable plays, among his ? best known impersonations being Tony Lumpkin and Bob Acres. In 1871-72 he appeared at the Gaiety in comedy and burlesque with , Toole. In 1881 he created the King in " La Maecotte," and played leading parts in "Boccaccio" and "Rip Van Winkle." . Hs then toured America and South Africa with : success," and, returning to London, played a long round 'of Shakesperean and other parts.. In 1905 and 1906 v he played in "The Bondman" at Drury Lane, and in 1908 took the part of Host of the Garter in the "Merry Wives of Windsor." He was the- last of the original members of the Savage Club.
