SMALL FIRES.
FOUR IN A. WEEK. [by telegraph.—press association.] Gisborne, Thursday. There have been several small fires this week. A house owned by Alexander Gibson at Te Arai was destroyed. It was insured in the Victoria Company for £175. Thomas' store and dwelling at Patutahi were burned the same night. The insurances are £110 in the State office, and £450 in tha Conmercial Union. A house owned by the Sievwright estate, and occupied by Mr. Pilcher, was the next to go. It was insured for £150 in the State office and £125 in the Sun. These fires were followed last night by the destruction of a house owned by the Kerikeri estate, and occupied by a Maori. It was insured for £500 in the Guardian Company.
: FIRE AT A MINE. - [BY TELEGRAM. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAiHr, Thursday. Shortly after -past one this morning a fire was discovered in the change-house at the Grand Junction mine. The prompt response of the fire brigade prevented serious damage 'to the building, but the bulk of the clothing belonging to the men on shift at the' time was destroyed. It ✓seems that before going below, the men ' left their clothing on the steam pipes, • and the pipes becoming overheated set fire to the clothes. -
