THE DRAINAGE BOARD.
APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY: A meeting of the Auckland. Drainage Board was held in the City Council Chambers last evening. There'were present: The Mayor, .» Mr. , 0. D. Grey (chairman), and Messrs. L. J. Bagnall, R. Farrell, R. Tudeliope, G. Knight, J. Patterson, W. C. Somers, P. M. Mackay, A. J. Entrican, C. J. Parr, H. ; M. Smeeton,. W. E. Hutchison, J. Court, \ A., E. ' " Some discussion took place regarding the selection made by, the Finance Committee in reducing the names of the applicants for the position of secretary to six. Mr. Bloom field said he understood that the reduction to eight was comparatively easy, but it:, was a matter of great difficulty to reduce the eight by two, and he thought those two should be submitted to the ballot. " S The committee'« report setting out the six names was submitted and adopted. Air. Bloom field moved that the names of Messrs. Palethorps and Hutchison be added to those submitted for the" selection. V' ; , Considerable time was * occupied in discussion regarding whether; the names could 'bo added after the report was adopted, and eventually it s was agreed to fix the number at eight, and' the names of the following , applicants were therefore submitted to the ballot:—G. A. Esther, R. H. Irwin, H. A.: Somerville, L. A. Stringer, T. E. Whitton, F. B. Winston, H. G. Palethorpe, and J. E. Hutchison.' , * . The first step was a reduction to five, and this resulted in the names of Irwin, Somerville, Whitton, Winston, and Palethorpe being retained. A reduction to four followed, and the voting was: Palethorpe 16, ,Whitton 15, Somerville 15, and Irwin 15. The next ballot to reduce to two resulted : Irwin 15, Whitton 14, Palethorpe 11, and Somerville 10. In the final ballot Irwin secured 14 and Whitton 11. •. Mr.: Irwin was therefore appointed, to the position. \ Mr. R. H. Irwin,: who is 41 years of age, has been town clerk and treasurer to the Grey Lynn Borough Council for the past six years. Previous to his arrival in the Dominion in 1902 he acted as secretary to various limited liability companies in the - United Kingdom. ' j
