' A mkimi, for,.. prowess at any' particular branch of sport is riot usually bestowed on the successful competitor for its intrinsic value, but at least one individual, a Christchurch swimmer, found that when he was "hard up" the gold medals in his possession were an asset when handed over to a pawnbroker. The matter was brought before the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, by Mr. Walter Johnson, when he tstated that certain medals which had been, presented by various cciiiHa to a winner of many : championship laces, were now being displayed ■in a pawnbrokers shop in Chrietchurch. He thought that the council should remove the stigma that had been cast on swimming, by assisting to redeem the pledges. The price asked: by the "present holder" of the medals was £10. The council could not see its way to grant the request.
