THE MEN'S DEMANDS. INCREASED PAY WANTED. On Saturday morning Mr. Arthur Rosser, secretary of the' Auckland Tramways Employees' Union, lodged an application with' the clerk of awards,' Mr. E. W. Cave, requesting the President of the Arbitration Court to hold a special meeting of the Court to hear tae Auckland Electric Tramways dispute. A schedule of claims for consider: -ion has been filed, the employees claiming adjustment of working hours, overtime, annual leave, rates of wagos, promotions, terms of engagement, and various other ameliorations. The employees' claims are thus set forth: — That the working/time for all employees shall be eight hours per day, though employers shall have the right to call' upon motormen and conductors to work an additional hour, when necessary, at the ordinary rate,of pay. Motormen and conductors shall be paid while waiting at sports, races, and other public, amusements, unless signed off at a home depot, and in no case shall they be signed o.i for less than one hour. Motormen and conductors booked up on specials to go out after nine p.m., shall lie paid a minimum of two hours for .such work. Those on duty shall be paid for. the time thev are waiting while traffic is suspended during church hours on Sundays. " All time worked beyond the nine hours and eight hours respectively, mentioned in Clause 1 hereof, shall be deemed to ba overtime, and shall 'be paid for at time-and-a-half rates. All time worked on the following holidays shall be paid for at the rate of time-and-a-half, viz. :—New Year's Day, January 2, Anniversary Day, Easter Monday, Empire Day, Labour Day, Sovereign's Birthday, and Boxing Day. On Good Friday apd Christmas Day, double time rates shu.. oe naid. For work done on Sundays, time-and-a-half rates shall be paid up to eight hours, after which double time shall be paid. Each and every employee, after having served twelve months with the company, shall be entitled to, and shall receive; not less than 10 consecutive working days in each year, as a holiday, to be paid for at full ordinary rates. The following shall be minimum rates of wages payable to the several classes of workers respectively : —Motormen, on cars with open fronts, Is 3d per hour; motormen, on'cars with glass" fronts, Is lid; conductors, Is; switchmen, Is lid; assistant switchmen (boys), 8d; trackmen and track repairers, Is; track repairers (night ■work), Is 6d; general' labourers (including car-cleaners), Is; car examiners, Is 3d; pitmen and truckmen, Is,lid; firemen, to man in charge of shift, Is 3d; firemen, not in charge of shift, Is lid; trimmers, Is lid; greasers (cleaning wheel-pits to be greasers' work), Is 2d: handymen, Is lid; shift-electricians, electricians, and dynamo attendants, Is 3d; switch-board attendants, for first three months bd; switch-board attendants, for next nine months, 9d; switch-board attendants, after 12 months' service, Is; wiremen, Is 3d; linesmen (including emergency linesmen), Is 4d; blacksmiths, 10s per "da*-; strikers, 8s; ticket inspectors, during the first three months, £3 per. week; ticket inspectors, after three months' service, £3 ss; revenue clerks at depots, during first six months, £2 12s revenue clerks at depots, after six months' service, £2 6d: revenue clerks in charge at Ponsonby and Epsom, £3 ss. Any person or persons reporting an employee for anv offence involving dismissal, suspension, or loss of standing, shall, if the offence is denied by the employee, be required to substantiate the report in the presence of an officer of the company, and the employee concerned, failing which-the employee shall be completely exonerated and the report destroyed. Claim is also made that all motormen should be provided with seats'. Uniforms shall be supplied once every nine months.
