: , A NOVEL EXCUSE. IT,~'/[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . Hamilton - , Saturday. At the Police : Court yesterday, before Messre. Graham and Davis, J.P.'s, John Majoribanks Steele was charged with forging and uttering four valueless cheques. J. M. Brown, . assistant in Hallenstein Bros.' shop, deposed that defendant, on December 8, bought goods to the value of £3 196 Id, and tendered a cheque for £12 in payment. He. gave,him £3 Os Id change, and defendant was to call back for the balance in about an hour. In the meantime witness telegraphed to Auckland and found that the accused had no account at the bank He then handed the matter over to the;' police. The:-goods ordered -wore not delivered. W. Beavan, manager of a saddler's .shop, and H. H. Howdcn, jeweller, related similar experiences to the above. - - ' The accused, who pleaded guilty to. all the charges, was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. He urged in extenuation, that he was not liable for his actions, having at the time been under the influence of drugs, which he took on account of Kid headaches, consequent on a severe wound received in South Africa.
