ESCORTED HOME BY POLICE.
A crowd of between 200 and .500 youths, with nothing better to do, gathered outside tin; Foresters' Hall, Newton, last evening, to wait for Mr. J. W. Taylor, who had attended Mr. Richardson's meeting, and who, it will be remembered, was chased and hustled recently when he endeavoured to deliver a i>olitical speech as an intending candidate for City Central. Last night's crowd greeted the man with ironical cheers, and invited him to deliver a speech in the street, and there was conaiderablo hooting and yelling. The Newton police, however, were on the alert for any trouble, and quickly interposed, five or them keeping close to Taylor, who was advised to proceed to his home as quietly as possible. Under the police guaid, Taylor walked along Ivarangahapo Road, and down Upper Queenstreet, the crowd occasionally cheering loudly. The irragular procession along Karangahape Road coon attracted attention, and the number of "followers" had increased to about 500 by the time Upper Queen-street was reached. Although the crowd seemed goodhumored enough, tho police took no chances, and escorted Taylor to. hi« boardir.ghou'se in a. side street, three constables guarding the street entrance till tho gathering dispersed. The crowd accorded the members of the force three cheers as a, parting expression of goodwill
