OTIRA TUNNEL STRIKE.
SATISFACTORY SETTLEMENT. ] i [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] j Christchurch, Wednesday. The strike at the Otira tunnel seems to J have been a very mild affair. A local correspondent telegraphs that the trouble, j which was quite unexpected, arose on Monday evening, and resulted in the whole of j the men engaged in the tunnel work going temporarily on strike. It appears that j they struck an . unusually wet patch of ground, which was the means of bringing about the trouble. The men lately have been working six-hour shifts, being ' paid for eight hours, on account of the wet ini the tunnel. They demanded a half-hour' for crib time in addition, reducing their actual working time to five and a-lialf hours. , 1 The strike came as a surprise to the j union, the men having acted spontaneously, ! without placing fclw matter before that body. The result of the union meeting held on Tuesday morning was that the union very considerably modified the demands madia by the men, and stated their willingness to return to work provided they were allowed to have a snack and hot drink during their shift period without stopping the work. Messrs. McLean amd Sons agreed to tihis, and work was to be j resumed immediately.
