Deans was one of the finest and most popular players that Canterbury has produced. Ho Was the ron of the late Mr, J. Deans, runholder, of Riccarton, and was educated at the Boys' High School, Christchurch, where he took a prominent part in athletics. After leaving school in 1901, he joined the High School Old Boys' Football Club, and in 1903 made his first appearance in representative football. It was at once apparent that he was a player of more than ordinary merit, and in 1905 he made the trip Home with' the " All Blacks." Deceased was the, youngest member of that "combination, his age then being 21.
