FATALITY ON A SHIP.
— «» GREASER CRUSHED TO DEATH. & shocking accident, with fatal conse- • .' . quenccs, occurred on the s.s. Cornwall, ;. • lying at Queen-street Wharf, at 11 o'clock Y on Saturday morning. A big boiler was ]•' being transferred from the steamer to the f?; wharf by means of a temporary derrick, when the latter slipped out of its shoe, and • -, a portion of it skidding along the deck crashed through the skylight and descended ,*• into the refrigerating room. It passed over - . the top of the machinery and struck a greaser named Edward Doherty, driving ;' him back against a bulkhead and pinning him there. . , The unfortunate man was extricated with all possible speed, but expired during the , process. H» was taken into a cabin, where it was found that his right side had been ' crushed in, while his right arm had been reduced to a pulp. Dr. Girdler was summoned, but was only able to pronounce life 1 ■ extinct. , The boiler was held by the remaining part . of the derrick, and was much dented. ' The inquest on the body of deceased was opened at the Criterion' Hotel by the Coro-(•-.-V.v'v'ner yesterday, and after .evidence of identification and as to the injuries had been given was adjourned until to-day, in order to enable Mr. Weathevilt, local inspector of .'t , machinery, to be called. Deceased was a married man, about 40 or 50 years of age, and belonged to London.
