TRAMWAY DISPUTES.
THE AUCKLAND DEADLOCK. MR. MILLAR'S POSITION. [BY telegraph.—pkess ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. A little while ago it was anticipated that the Minister for Labour (the-Hon. J. A. Millar) would, if considered acceptable, take the position of chairman of the special board of conciliation set up to consider the differences between the Auckland Tramways Company and the employees, and, in view of his achievements as president of the recent marine conference, it was regarded as more than likely that he would assist in bringing about an arrangement that would be satisfactory !to both parties. Unfortunately in the opinion of some of the principals that hope has had to be abandoned. Mr. Millar was, it is reported, regarded by both sides as the most suitable man for the position, but after consultation with his colleagues he has been compelled to decline oh account of the near approach of Parliament and the great amount of work that has to be transacted in the interval. At the same time Mr. Millar fully appreciates the expression of confidence implied in the proposal,. as the position will be one entailing considerable responsibility on anyone who is selected to' occupy it, ■."■' . THE OHRISTOHURCH CASE. [by TELEGRAPH.PRESS association.] { Christchurch, Thursday. The application. for enforcement against the Christchurch Tramway Board in respect of the appointment of a ticket inspector from outside the ranks of the conductors and motormen came before the Arbitration Court to-day. The question as argued before the Court turned on the point whether promotions had to be made from conductors and motormen only, or from the office staff also. Decision was reserved.
