WHANG [I!V TELEGRAPH.--OWX CORRESI'ONDENT.] Whangarki, Thursday. The monthly meeting of the Whangarei Chamber Vof Commerce took place last night, and in the absence of the president Mr. J. Marshall presided. In accordance with the report, of a sub-com-mittee it was decided to apply for improved mail services to several of the surrounding country districts. The chairman staled that a satisfactory arrangement could now be made with regard to Opau railway tickets issued to steamer passengers. * With a. view to making Whangarei a. port of entry, it. was re : solved to submit figures showing the total dues paid to the Customs Department.. It was resolved to apply to the Railway Department for additional verandah accommodation at the Whangarei railway station, and to persevere in obtaining telephonic communication for back districts. Mr. L. Kelly, eldest son of Mr. A. Kelly, Vine'town, received a- severe wound in the eye while out shooting a. few days ago, compelling him to proceed to Auckland for medical advice. PAEROA. [hy tkleckavh.own* CORRESPONDENT.] Paeiioa, Thursday. At the Magistrate's Court, to-day, judgment was given in a. case in which Dr. Smith sued a man named Davey for £3 3s for medical attendance. The man was injured in the Talisman mine, and the doctor was first called by some official of the company, defendant contending that the company should pay. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount claimed, with cost*. •Juagment was also given in 'the case in which E. Hartley sued D. Craig and 11. Stewart for £50 damages for putting a bailiff in unlawfully. Judgment was (riven for the defendants. At a meeting of the Ohinemuri Licensing Commute, to-day, an application was heard by H. Brumon for permission t-» remove the license of the Waiorongomai Hotel to new premises, a short dis- , tance from the old premises, which were destroyed by fire some time ago. At the previous sitting of the committee, evidence was given by those objecting to the removal. Evidence was given to-day by those in favour of the. removal, and the application was granted unanimously.At the Police Court to-day Alfred Davitt was fined £3 and costs for. being on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order, while John Matthews, for accompanying a prohibited person on licensed premises, was discharged with a caution. Dr. Robertson has informed the secretary of the' St. John Ambulance Society that "Miss Winkleman gained the highest number of marks in the recent examination, and thus obtains Mr. A. Kohn's gold medal. The doctor adds that all the students wrote splendid papers. At a meeting of the members of . the Waihi Terminating Building Society last night, appropriations Nos. 7 and 8 of the first group, of £100 each, were put up for sale. Appropriation No.- 7 was first offered for sale, and on the tenders being opened the chairman announced that the holder of share No. 59 had tendered the highest price, £58 15s, and declared him the purchaser. The successful tenderer being the holder of more than one share, elected to take the other £100 at the same price. The Government Gazette, of-June 11, announces the issue of an Order-in-Council extending the benefits of the Advances to Settlers Act to lands held on license for residence sites under the Mining Act, 1905. This means that residents of Waihi can now obtain loans for erecting or buying homes.

Meetings of the Finance and Works Committees of the Waihi Borough Council were held last evening in the Borough Chambers, the Mayor (Mr. J. Newth) in the chair. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £1367 17s 7d. The overdraft at the bank was reported as £21,269 16s 4d, amount of gold duty outstanding £357 16s, and receipts since hist meeting £2600 lis 9d. In connection with the national defenco movement, Mr. J. A. Thompson interviewed the committees, and stated that he had been asked to pave the way for a. meeting to be held in Waihi. under the auspices of the National Defence League. Mr. Thompson explained the objects and benefits of the league, and those present wore .-nrolled as members. The Mayor wits appointed to attend the annual meetmg of the Auckland Railway League, on behalf of the borough, on the 22nd inst. OTAHUHU. [FROM OUR OWN COJtRESZ'OSUKST.] The annual social and reunion in connection witu Holy Trinity Church was held in the public hall on Wednesday evening. The hall was nicely decorated -with flags and' was crowded to the doors., Enjoyable musical items were contributed by the Auckland Bach Society, Orpheus Quartette, Miss Phyllis Dean, and Mr. C. G. Irving. The Rev. H. Mason and the Rev. Canon F. Gould addressed the gathering, the former specially reminding the parishioners of the £300 wanted by the Orphan Home Trust Board before the end of the month to obtain the £1000 ottered by Archdeacon Williams. Dancing and games -were indulged in till 12 o'clock. Miss Lord supplied the music for the dancing and Mr. Culpan gave a recitation later in the evening. HAMILTON. [rilOU OVR, OWN COREESrONDENT.] ■ The annual meeting of the Hamilton Horticultural Society was held on Wednesday afternoon, the following being elected to'office- for the current year: —President, Dr. Douglas; joint secretaries, Mesdames H. Valderand Going; committee, Mesdames H. Valder, Shanaghan, Furbv, Going, Stevens, Quick, Shaw, F. B. Jolly, A. Bell, Misses Searancke, McPhcrson, and Runciman. The acting-secretary (Mr. J. 8. Edgecumbe) reported that the society had a credit balance of £13 8s 9d. As for wit. and Humour good, Bel a bit and Back Tom Hood!
