(Received April 12, 4.20 p.m.) London, April 11. Lord Rayleigh succeeds the late Duke of Devonshire as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
John Wm. Strutt Rayleigh, P. 0., 3rd baron, has been scientific adviser to Trinity House since 1896 Ke is 66 years of age. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Lord Rayleigh was senior wrangler and Smith's Prizeman in 1865, and Fellow in 1366. In 1879 he, was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge. Other offices held by him have been those of Secretary to the Royal Society, the Lord-Lieutenancy of Essex,, and professorship of Natural Philosophy at tne Royal Institution. He is an officer of the Legion of Honour. . Lord Rayleigh has issued numerous scientific papers, many of which were recently republished.
