Foe some timo past £20 per month ha* been regarded by the Marino Department as the ruling rate of pay for chief engineers on steamers within the Dominion, but instances have come to light showing" that a lcssei sum has beep accepted. A case occurred at Port Chalmers to-day, where a. chief engineer on a steamer had been working undor special agreement for £16 per month. This agreement has been held to bo invalid, and the engineer in question will have to be paid £20 per month in future.
