BIBLE-READING IN SCHOOLS.
THE NELSON SYSTEM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. Referring to the action of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, regarding Bible reading in schools, the Minister for Education, thinks that the Nelson system of Scripture lessons in State schools must have led to a misapprehension in Napier. In Nelson the Bible is read in the schools to some extent, and the Scriptural teaching is done outside the State tune, children not being obliged to attend the class. " That system," added the Minister, " has been adopted in several places, and as far as I can sec, it does not conflict with the Act. So long as definite hours are given to secular instruction, the requirements of the Act are complied with, and tho religious lessons are given by voluntary arrangement outside, the ordinary school hours."
